The Underrated Magic of the 6th House

The 6th house does not receive enough credit in astrology. I mean, who likes paperwork? Working out? A healthy diet? Booooring. However, without the 6th house, there would be no 12th house. No beautiful experiences of oneness and connection to other people, no spiritual journey into higher realms. The 6th house is its own kind of magic.

Have you ever finished a long list of tasks only to feel better?
Has taking care of someone else’s problems made you feel less alone?
Has changing your lifestyle ever provided you with more optimism and joy?

The 6th house is all about taking charge of our mundane daily lives, so we make room for something better. We take care of the details so that we have the freedom to escape, explore and learn through the Neptunian energy that is reflected. If we don’t take care of our duties and daily lives, we cannot possibly have room to go beyond them. Why? Because the tasks will pile up, the sink will be full of dishes, our health will suffer and our cars will break down, and next thing we know, we are so busy fixing it all we can’t possibly have room for anything else. No room for beautiful art, music, singing in the rain or reading a good book. Just think how much space you are making for what can genuinely elevate life from surviving to actually living!

It is better to make small daily efforts than to allow a whole pile of problems to take over.
This is not only about physical tasks or work but about the psychological mess that can sometimes pile up if we don’t give daily attention to what is bothering us. If we keep ignoring something, it will eventually become bigger and overwhelming. Think about it this way- Neptune, ruler of the 12th house, has no boundaries and sees infinity as the true reality.
BUT the shadow side of this feeling is that Neptune has no boundaries about what can be…Including nasty things. According to Neptune’s vivid imagination, there are infinite ways that things can happen or go wrong. That is why we become worried and anxious if we don’t use our 6th house. We start thinking about the infinite and strange ways something can go wrong. We feel that we have to plan of disaster and that no matter what something will break or we will be unable to get through the day.
A strong 6th house means being grounded and realistic about our plans and taking care of things before they become problems. It also means taking care of our physical self because we know our spirit and body are one WHOLE. A weak 6th house will try and run away from responsibility by saying: “The body does not matter, the bills don’t matter, I don’t need money. I will be spiritual!”

You know someone has a weak 6th house when they ignore physical needs or the realities of daily life. They perceive the material world as bad or not spiritual. They project their fears and pains and blame the world for being unfair. They decide to just ignore the world. Maybe they escape to go living in the woods (a mild case) or into addiction (worst case). I have a lot of compassion for this reaction. They are in pain and running away is an instinct. Unfortunately, it is not the solution. The solution is to understand that the material world is also spiritual if they decide to make it so…It is their job to bring vision, dreams and magic into daily reality. They can do this through art, music, and the fantastic visions they share with their loved ones for a better future. The infinite possibilities are there. They must first wash the dishes, sign the contract, feed the cat and make themselves a meal that involves vegetables and not sugar.

The 6th house is NOT less spiritual than its mirroring 12th house. Absolutely not. It is the house of service and duty. People that live in their 6th house are the ones that actually make a difference. They are the ones helping those in need, caring for animals and nature and making changes in our public institutions. It is prevalent to find politicians and social leaders with a strong 6th house. They feel like they are vessels for the work they must do and are born with a vision about their mission. This sense of “things can be better” comes from their 12th house shadow. That is why full 6th houses are found among many famous people.

The sense of mission and service 6th house people have propels them to take on the work other people shy away from. They tend to be self-contained in their sense of duty and mission in a way that well…It just works. They don’t need to search for who they are in confusion because their identity is very solid. They define themselves by what they do and the actions they take. They are not so concerned with always searching for identity and meaning because they feel mission is meaning.
Of course, the unbalanced version of that would be someone who only sees work as important and can never relax. In my experience with clients, it is usually easier to fix such a situation than the other one. The 12th house problems tend to be much more severe and it is generally easier to take a person out of their 6th house and towards their 12th house.

“As above so below”
We must remember that the Virgo-Pisces axis symbolizes wholeness, purity and perfection. We must realize the body needs spirit and the spirit needs the body. We must always balance the needs of the two and find ways to make the mundane extraordinary and the extraordinary practical and valuable.

They have skills that can be envied when it comes to planning and considering limitations. Go to them for advice. They have anxiety about never achieving their dreams or being respected for their efforts.

Mars square Pluto in the natal chart

If you have this aspect in your natal chart you are a naturally incredibly tenacious. This aspect like many Pluto aspects is not something other people notice at first glance about you. It is a force that you keep close to your heart and like a magical ace you present it when something triggers you to take action.

Your energy comes from the depths of your physical core and seems to rely on an infinite potential for survival. It can often seem even to you that you do not know where this energy comes from.

Growing up taking any form of assertive action could feel frightening because it awoke some basic animalistic instinct in your heart which you felt was not appropriate or even embarrassing. You have found you are best able to assert yourself with vigor and passion when times are hard. Pushing yourself to the limit is often the only way to access this volcano of passion that is beyond your control.

It is very likely you direct this energy into some form of sport or into your work. If you aren’t directing it to achieve something in the world you would often find yourself in conflict with other people who want to dominate and cage you in a spiritual prison so that you can’t escape and create chaos. You would resist with all your’ might when anyone tries and take away your right to exercise your full strength and ambition.

Ambition is something you are naturally very prone too. You are motivated by the potential to better yourself and gain some form of control over your life. You are not soft hearted and often would step on your own vulnerable parts just to get to the top. The tricky thing with this aspect is that once it ignites in a fire like a huge metal machine it is very hard to calm it down. The reason this is tricky is that other parts of your personality might not be ready to go to war just yet.

You may find yourself often in a state of inner conflict that prevents you from moving forward and achieving anything at all. This comes down to a pretty simple state of fear of what you might create if you go forward. You are not afraid of other people but sometimes you are afraid of yourself and what you are capable of. You might find passion, ambition and drive something you dislike in other people because you reject that part of yourself. It is very important for you to learn what your limits are so that you don’t burn out and end up hurting yourself or someone else.

Children with this aspect do best when they are kept active and allowed to make mistakes. They are the type of child to break a watch to see its machinations and get angry when they find it broken. Pluto likes to destroy in order to understand how something works and Mars like to create new life. If you think about this combination you can realize this aspect suggests these people have an inner drive for life in all forms. They enjoy blood pumping through their veins, sun on their burned skin in summer, the pain of the freezing cold on top of a mountain and the afterglow of endorphins born from pain and strain. They are incredibly good at self-control and have a high tolerance for stress that seems to be based on some inner conviction that they can do anything.

The paradox is that if no situations in their life allow them to exercise their will-power or spiritual muscles they will create the situations in an artificial manner. If life becomes too easy and there is nothing to fight for they would become their own worst enemies. They would try and punish themselves and would feel as if they are controlled by some impulse that is almost evil in its deliciousness. I want to point out this is what happens when you reject Pluto and become the slave of your Mars.

There is nothing wrong or evil about your instincts and impulses but have enough responsibility to take time and learn where and how to express them. You want to create but sometimes you destroy. The opposite is also very true! You often create something powerfully evocative in the psyche of other people. You can inspire others to lean on their instincts and strength and survive anything. It is when you are using your instincts to save life that you become free from the slavery of your own fire.

Saving life doesn’t always mean being a firefighter or surgeon although in many cases that is a popular field for you to end up in. Saving life can mean saving the fire in other people’s hearts. You can’t stand seeing other people become so weak as to stop fighting for their power. You can become an example and activist of living life without apologizes. You can lift the spirit of those who think they have been defeated and that is a wonderful gift.

My advice to you would be to try and write down situations where you felt out of control or that your actions were destructive. Take time to really find a pattern of what is a trigger for you. These situations actually hold the key to your hidden energy. After you figure out what these situations are you would be better prepared for battle. If you feel like you are being eaten alive by an invisible fire it is a good idea to find balance through physical activity. I always suggest to keep your ambitiousness to yourself and just work behind the scenes. This aspect works best when kept safely out of the judgment of others. Unlike the opposition what you have is a battery with infinite potential that is volatile if not directed into something constructively destructive.

Destruction is part of nature and the cycle of life. Life is often born out of the ashes of what came before it. You can reinvent that angry, sullen and chaotic individual that once was yourself and become a creator with a shield of diamond strong will-power. You can also fall from grace when you fall into the trap of thinking humans are just animals. The spiritual side of Pluto wants to elevate the flesh into spirit. The instinctive and raw appetite you have for life, movement, sex, love, work and power can be crystalized into something more nuanced and gentle. The inner protector within you is just waiting to be reborn. It is waiting to wear its past mistakes as dirty metal armor while inside its chest would burn a gentle pure fire of intense protectiveness for all that has a beating heart.

The 12th house: What is Wrong with the World

When a planet sits in the 12th house of a natal chart it can be both a beautiful and difficult experience, often at the same time. If you have a planet of even several planets in the 12th house learning as much as you can about it is crucial. This is because 12th house planets can be hard to ever fully know and own. Especially if the rest of your chart is much more accessible overall. for example, you have a lot of fire signs or planets in houses 1 to 7.

The way I see it, one issue is that any planet in the 12th house is already passed on from this world. It is that part of you that is old, wise, evolved more than any other. It doesn’t mean it has not lessons to learn, but it may feel it does not want to fully be present in the here and now- it wants to escape into other realms of being beyond physical existence. It wants to go back to the other world, the womb and the infinite world of the divine.

Do you see the problem? Many parts of life do offer us illusory escape: We dream in our sleep, we watch movies and read books, listen to music and daydream. So whatever planet is in your 12th house is going to be somewhat prone to not wanting to deal with its mission in the classic sense.  For example, Mercury would not want to use rational thinking and prefer mystical thinking, Venus may not consider physical beauty and form, Saturn will feel like the ultimate victim of circumstance.

I’m painting what seems like a negative picture but really it is only one aspect of this. After all, I did say this planet is already living in the spirit world- it is your highest self. But can that part of you meet reality? Can it live in our current world?

The real issue is that we are living in a world that is not perfect. We see and feel a great deal of suffering. Today more than ever we are exposed to what is going on in the world through the news and online. It cannot be ignored. As a 12th house person you will not be able to shut off all that feels so very wrong to you. Growing up you probably were told to shut off your empathy because it didn’t fit in so well with daily life and tasks. You may have been made to feel you need to reject that part of yourself that felt something was not right. You see this with children who ask questions, who wonder why things are the way they are. Teachers and grown-ups tell them not to ask those questions, not to cry over the puppy or homeless man in the street. Instead you were told you need to be strong, too survive, to fight and do your homework. To do all these Virgo things of daily routine and living. On the one hand, it is very true that the 12ht house person needs to learn to go through life all the mundane tasks of work and routine. To learn to take hold of every day and not run away. The problem is that our current world is not yet built for true compassion- people ate focused on surviving and on being “strong”. You probably rejected those aspects of yourself. Try and think back on when and how it was happening. Try and remember who you used to be before you had to develop thicker skin. You might even discover some problems started taking up root in your mind and body when it happened. Just because you disowned those parts of yourself that could not handle the pain and emotional stimulation- those parts are still a part of you. A disowned 12ht house is like a palace full of treasures with a wide open door: anyone can come and steal its treasures and burn it down to the ground. An owned 12th house shines bright light for miles, it opens its door to those in need and closes it in front of those who wish to do evil.

The people who tell the 12ht house person to develop thicker skin and be strong are missing the point. Sure, you could use some tools to deal better with organizing your life and achieving some goals. But your strength is simply different. It is not the fighting kind that goes to war like Mars. Or the kind the develops ideas like Mercury. It is the elusive strength of Neptune: that only seems weak on the surface but in fact is more long standing then them all. You have behind you the power of spirit, and the entire light of creation. Can anything triumph that? You tell me.

You need to let the planet in the 12th house be who it is, stop wearing masks and acting. Playing a role is so common for you may have forgotten you are going through the motions of a written script.  There is always a powerful creative force behind the 12th house planets, they can unleash creations that do seem to come from out of this world. They can excess experiences that people only dream of and bring them into our reality. Transforming what is wrong by showing the gap between the way things are and the way things should be. The 8th house does this too but through death and transformation, the 12h house is already…Dead. It knows what stays infinite despite death:  What is true and good, that is love and actions that impact people. These stays and never die and form them it will fight.

What is your 12th house experience?

I hope to explore the 12th house in my next posts. Starting with planets and moving on to aspects and celebrity charts.

Taking Care of your Mercury

In your natal chart, the planet Mercury might be overlooked in relation to your emotional well-being, but what can be more important than being able to connect with the world? To communicate with friends, lovers and family and to express your points of view to others? We as human beings need to feel heard and understood. We need it like air. Sometimes we talk because we want to feel we matter in the eyes of people. Sometimes we listen and offer our help and advice to loved ones. When we feel no one is listening or what we are saying is ignored we start to feel like we don’t matter. We ask: “What is wrong with me? Am I invisible?” This is Mercury territory. Sometimes, we change our communication just to fit in, and slowly we start to feel like we are lying to ourselves. This is normal and there is no avoiding compromising ourselves in society on some level. The problem starts, when this effects our self-esteem and ability to respect our boundaries. When a buildup of our unexpressed thoughts starts collecting like dirty laundry in our minds we become weaker. Knowing what your true Mercury needs are, can help you not overstep your own boundaries. Here is a general frame work for Mercury in your chart. Remember, aspects to other planets modify your Mercury and can serve as guide lines for dealing with any issue. The house would show you what area in your life this drama takes place.

Mercury in Fire signs:

You need to say whatever comes into your head. You are an immediate communicator. Holding your tongue feels like torture. You are honest in what you say and don’t see the point of diplomacy. You are very expressive, and people know that you will let them know if you love or hate something. You might feel as if people don’t realize there is more to your thoughts than you show. Your lesson is to learn that if you want to be honest in your opinion, you can give yourself time to take a step back and reflect. You might feel deeper aspects of your mind don’t get to be expressed and others don’t take you seriously. You can teach others to be fearless and less self-conscious. You will learn that not everyone is as fearless and sometimes not hurting feelings is just as important as any truth. Instead, express your clear and bright point of view through other means. You can encourage, lead and shine through your communication.

Mercury in Air signs:

You have many thoughts and ideas happening your mind, focusing on just one seems boring. You need to be stimulated by others. You need your thoughts to meet a point of focus in order to express. Silence is crippling for you and not connecting with others makes you sick. It doesn’t matter if you are understood as long as you are heard. You don’t mind playing devil’s advocate and can say things you don’t really mean. You enjoy small talk, banter and a good argument. You are a quick thinker and can be very objective about your opinions. You see forms of communication as art and in that sense truth is flexible and changing. You need to be around people who don’t try and put boundaries to your communication. It is important others know what you truly believe in and what is simply an exercise for you. Don’t be offended if people take what you say too seriously, just use humor to show them it’s not a big deal.

Mercury in Earth signs:

You like to have a strong foundation to any opinion. You don’t make up your mind without considering all options. You tend to communicate in ways that relate to the immediate world and its concerns. Whatever is happening around you is going to be on your mind. You have the ability to apply anything you study to your communication. Because you you’re your time to reflect before you speak, changing your mind can be a big effort of reconsidering an entire foundation. You think words matter and don’t take it lightly if someone offends you. You can communicate complicate things in a simple manner that anyone can understand. You prefer to listen and only say something if you are sure about the impact it will have. You are good at offering advice to people and they respect your opinion as it looks you worked hard for it. You hate being cornered or rushed by people and feel ignored and disrespected if that happens. You need people who would listen to you.

Mercury in Water signs:

You communicate only a small portion of what is on your mind. You feel thoughts are an endless process that you have no control over. You are strongly effected by opinions around you. You can be flexible in your communication and use non-verbal means. Using movement, dance or body language feels more honest. You adapt your communication to the circumstance at hand. You connect to the world and others through symbols and larger ideas. You sometimes erupt in very expressive outbursts and speeches about things you care about- that surprise people. You would rather stay silent than have a conflict. Words can wound you deeply. You can communicate what others are thinking better than they can. You are not so good at communicating what you are thinking. It changes anyway.
